Sidewalk and Parking Improvements
The landside of Signature Aviation’s facility at Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport (BJC) includes an FBO terminal and office building surrounded by sidewalks and an asphalt paved parking lot. Segments of the sidewalk concrete slabs were experiencing settlement of about 2 ½” between the top of the curb and the sidewalk. The settlement created dips along the curb and sidewalk slabs, causing water to pool after snow and rain events. In colder seasons, the pooled water freezes, causing slip/fall hazards. To avoid costly and prolonged demolition and replacement, MDG recommended a slab leveling technique using chemical grout consisting of a 2-part polyurethane mixture that was injected beneath the affected portions of the sidewalk concrete slabs. To further protect the sidewalk subgrade soils from water, all joints along the curbs and buildings were sealed using self-leveling high-performance polyurethane sealant. The asphalt-paved parking lot was also exhibiting signs of distress consisting of moderate to severe weathering, cracking, and raveling. A portion of the parking lot indicated poor surface drainage that also caused pooled water to freeze in the cold season, resulting in slip/fall hazards. MDG recommended the parking lot be milled and overlaid with new 2” asphalt pavement. Some grade adjustments were made during the milling process to improve surface drainage and reduce the accumulation of water. The mill/overlay and pavement marking were completed within 2 days and under budget by a local paving contractor.
